Democratic Nassau County executive candidate Laura Curran — whose Republican opponent Jack Martins has a campaign ad tying her to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio — has found a city proposal to come out against.

Curran, a county legislator from Baldwin, on Friday released a statement criticizing New York City’s study into reopening dozens of dormant groundwater wells in southeast Queens. City officials are considering renewing permits for the 68 wells that haven’t been used since 2007, and are preparing an environmental impact statement.

Martins was an early opponent of the plan, joining local environmentalists who say withdrawing water from the underground wells could damage the sole source aquifers that Long Island relies on for drinking water.

“I’ll be damned if we’ll let de Blasio, who’s got other sources of drinking water, try to bully Nassau County,” Curran said.

City officials have said no changes in water distribution methods are planned, but they want to have options in case of emergency or drought.

Martins, who opposes reopening of the city wells, in his first ad of the campaign tried to link Curran to de Blasio. The ad noted that Curran’s and de Blasio’s campaigns have used the same consulting firm — BerlinRosen, which had been subpoenaed in a now-closed criminal probe of the mayor’s fundraising operation.
