Nassau County paid 15,135 current or former government employees a total of $1.13 billion in 2023, an increase of 7% from 2022, according to payroll data obtained under the Freedom of Information Law. Nearly half of the payroll budget, or $561 million, went to the police department. You can explore the department breakdown in this interactive chart:

There were 1,292 county workers who earned more than $200,000, an increase of 33% compared to 971 who earned that same pay in 2022. Together, these 1,292 workers took home almost a third of the total payroll, or $330.2 million.

Out of these highest paid county employees, the overwhelming majority are either police department or correctional center staff. See the breakdown in the chart below.

The table below includes information for each Nassau County current or retired employee as of 2023. Total pay can amount to more than base pay and overtime because of other contractual obligations or because a retiring employee may have received a payout that includes accumulated vacation or other fringe benefits. Total pay can also be less than base pay if the employee did not work a full year.
