North Hempstead GOP selects Anthony Bulzomi for town supervisor run

North Hempstead's Republican Committee has selected Anthony Bulzomi, a Carle Place school board member, to run for town supervisor.
Republicans at their May 6 convention had failed to select a candidate for the post, held by first-term Democrat Judi Bosworth. A potential candidate had dropped out hours before the convention.
Bulzomi, 43, a construction manager for The Gordian Group in Long Island City, had run unsuccessfully for a town council seat in 2013.
In an interview, Bulzomi criticized the town's handling of finances, saying it "seems to continuously borrow money." Bulzomi said he would work to ensure that the tax levy is not increased in future budgets.
He also criticized town hires, saying he was concerned about nepotism. In 2014, the town board unanimously hired Kim Kaiman, wife of former supervisor Jon Kaiman, to lead the town's Business and Tourism Development Corp. He also said efforts to improve the building department weren't moving quickly enough.
Bosworth, through a spokeswoman, declined to comment. She took office in January 2014. In her first term, she has prioritized making the building department a more consumer-friendly agency.
She has hired an advocate to handle applications and appointed a veteran staffer to serve as the new commissioner. The department has been criticized since a 2008 corruption scandal brought reforms that slowed the permitting process.
Frank Moroney, the town's Republican chairman, said Bulzomi "ran a very credible race" in 2013 "and was able to organize some new, young people into the political process in Westbury and Carle Place."
Democrats are to announce their picks at the party convention next week. The town has not had a Republican supervisor since 1989, when Ben Zwirn defeated incumbent John Kiernan.
Democrats have advantages in fundraising and registration. About 40 percent of town voters are Democrats, while 29 percent are Republicans. Bosworth has $311,323.15 in her campaign account, according to January filings.
