Tiny turnout in special election for Suffolk County Legislature
Turnout in Tuesday’s special election to fill the Suffolk County legislature seat vacated by state Sen. Monica Martinez remained low, with less than 2 percent turning out to the polls by late afternoon after a sputtering morning start.
As of 4 p.m., only 684 voters had shown up to vote, a turnout of only 1.89 percent. At noon, only 214 voters or .59 percent had shown up in the Ninth Legislative District to cast a ballot. The contest pits Republican Maria Vidal against Democrat Sam Gonzalez and Conservative Anne Wiggins. In all, 36,103 residents are registered to vote.
Polls remain open until 9 p.m.
