State 9/11 exhibits set for LI
Stony Brook and Rockville Centre will be among 30 locations statewide to host "New York Remembers" exhibitions that are being organized as part of commemorations for the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Wednesday that the exhibitions will feature artifacts from the collections of the State Museum and National September 11 Memorial & Museum. He said many of the artifacts have never been seen by the public, such as a damaged emergency vehicle, airplane landing gear and engine parts, a religious "symbol steel" created by workers at the site, and a trailer filled with photographs and messages that was used by victims' families visiting Ground Zero.
Exhibits on Long Island will be at Stony Brook University and the Rockville Centre Recreation Center; exact locations will be announced at a later date. Each location will open during the week of Aug. 29 and run through the end of September. All will be open on Sept. 11.
"Every community across New York felt the impact of the senseless acts of terrorism that claimed thousands of lives just one decade ago," Cuomo said. "These exhibitions will give New Yorkers in towns, villages and cities all across the state a gathering place to once again stand as one community to make sure we never forget those who lost their lives on Sept. 11 and to embrace the spirit of unity that brought us together on that day of devastating tragedy."
The exhibit at Stony Brook University will be installed in the Charles B. Wang Center. A ceremony is being planned for Sept. 11 and will run simultaneously with the memorial service held at Ground Zero.
Stony Brook President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr. said in a statement: "As home to the Long Island World Trade Center Medical Monitoring Program . . . we anticipate that the Stony Brook University location will hold a high level of interest with the many thousands of first responders who are being cared for under that program, their family members and all Long Islanders who want to view this moving memorial exhibit."
