Funeral arrangements have been set for Southampton Town Police Chief Steven Skrynecki, who died at his home in Hicksville on Thursday.
Skrynecki, 69, was sick with myelodysplastic syndrome, a form of cancer, for the past seven months, said his son Scott Skrynecki, who serves as a detective sergeant in Nassau's Third Squad.
Wakes for Skrynecki will be held at Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Home in Hicksville on Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Amityville before his burial at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum in Farmingdale.
"Chief Skrynecki was one of the finest individuals I have ever known," Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman said in a news release. "He led a distinguished career in law enforcement which included serving as our police chief for six years. Chief Skrynecki always made public safety his highest priority. Southampton Town is forever grateful for his service.”
Posts flooded social media lamenting the loss of Skrynecki after the department announced his death. In a statement released on Facebook, the Southampton Town Police Department called Skrynecki “an honorable and respected officer … [who] dedicated himself to the profession” during his nearly 50-year career.
Skrynecki served as the Nassau County Police Department's highest ranking uniformed officer and the public face of many high-profile crime investigations after joining the department in 1974 as a patrol officer.
He left the Nassau Police Department in 2017 to take over the Southampton force. There, he unveiled plans for a department-wide body-worn camera program, sought to increase diversity among the ranks and issued a new policy directing officers to formally notify him in writing of secondary off-duty employment.
Capt. James Kiernan will take over Skrynecki's duties in Southampton on an interim basis, said department spokeswoman Lt. Susan Ralph.
