5 teens hurt in Patchogue school bus-dump truck crash

Five teenagers were taken to the hospital Monday after their school minibus was hit by a dump truck that ran a stop sign in Patchogue, Suffolk police said.

The victims had minor injuries and were taken to the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in Patchogue, said Bill Rowse, spokesman for the Patchogue Fire Department, which responded to the scene, along with Patchogue Ambulance Company.

Police said the driver of the truck, from All County Block and Supply in Holbrook, was going south on Grove Avenue when he drove past the stop sign about 3:30 p.m. and hit a school bus going east on Carman Street, police said.

The bus, from Educational Bus Transportation in Copiague, was carrying students and police are trying to determine which school they attend.

Five teenagers, ranging from 14 to 16, were treated for minor injuries at the hospital, police said.

The bus driver, 36, was not injured police said.

Police cited the dump truck driver, 65, who was not injured, for disregarding a stop sign and for an equipment violation.

Truck and bus officials could not be reached Monday night.
