Amityville woman killed in Southern State crash
An Amityville woman died Saturday after her car veered off the Southern State Parkway and crashed into a tree in the North Babylon area, police said.
When officers arrived about 3 p.m., Shaundell Jerrick, 34, was trapped in her 2009 Chevy Cobalt and unresponsive, according to State Police Sgt. William Fennell.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the eastbound vehicle swerved off the parkway into a wooded area, hitting a large tree head-on.
The cause of the wreck is under investigation. Witnesses told police the driver appeared to be trying to avoid a collision with another motorist. The victim was alone in the vehicle, Fennell said.
He said the stretch of the parkway where the crash occurred is straight.
The accident, just east of Exit 39, closed eastbound lanes for several hours. Deer Park and Central Islip fire departments responded.
