Suffolk County police arrested and charged a Deer Park middle school student after he allegedly brought a BB gun to school Thursday and “made threats of harm towards the school community” according to a department news release.

A student at Robert Frost Middle School on Half Hollow Road told school officials that a classmate had a weapon, Deer Park Superintendent James Cummings said in a message to parents.

School officials immediately searched the student, who was cooperative, and found the BB gun, Cummings said. The student was not identified.

He faces a charge of misdemeanor aggravated threat of mass harm and is scheduled for arraignment in Suffolk County Family Court at a later date, the Suffolk police said.

The school district notified Suffolk County police First Precinct officers, who responded to the school.

“Parents, please take this opportunity to speak with your children about the dangers and consequences of such actions,” Cummings said in the message. “Additionally, this is a good opportunity to remind your children that if they see something that doesn’t feel right, or seems to be harmful or threatening in nature, either on social media or in person, to report it.”
