Boaters rescued near East Fire Island, Coast Guard says

Two injured boaters were rescued Friday evening by U.S. Coast Guard members after a vessel ran aground near East Fire Island, officials said.
Watch standers from the Coast Guard’s Long Island Sound Sector received a call about 5 p.m. from Suffolk County emergency dispatch that a boat was stuck with eight people aboard near the island just north of Atlantique, the Coast Guard said in a news release.
Crew members from Station Fire Island responded in a 29-foot boat and found two people with minor injuries — a man 40, with possible broken ribs and a woman, in her late 20s, with a broken wrist, said Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Javier.
The two, along with another family member, were transferred to the Coast Guard boat, where basic medical treatment was given by an emergency services technician, and they were taken to Station Fire Island. The injured were then taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Bay Shore.
The remaining five people on the 25-foot boat that had run aground stayed on the scene with Islip Harbor Police until a commercial salvage vessel removed the boat from the sandbar.
