Central Islip pedestrian killed by SUV
A Central Islip woman was hit and killed by a sport utility vehicle Tuesday morning as she crossed the street near a Long Island Rail Road station, Suffolk County police said.
Juana Cabrera, 55, was pronounced dead at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore after she was hit crossing Lowell Avenue, about 100 feet west of the entrance to the LIRR station in Central Islip, police said.
Police said it was not clear if the Cabrera was headed to the train station. Police said it appears there was no criminality involved.
Cabrera was crossing the road about 7 a.m. when she was hit by a 1994 Honda driven by Charles Wright, 45, also of Central Islip, police said. Wright was not injured, police said.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing.
Detectives ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477, or the Third Squad at 631-854-8352. All calls will be kept confidential.
