College student from Mattituck struck, killed by car

A 20-year-old Mattituck woman died Saturday after she was struck by a car while crossing a street in Bridgeport, Connecticut, police and hospital officials said.

Kaitlyn Doorhy, a junior at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, was crossing Madison Avenue with another woman Friday afternoon. A driver swerved to avoid the other woman and struck Doorhy, Bridgeport police said.

The driver, Brandon Pouncie, 28, of Bridgeport, was not charged, police said.

St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport confirmed Doorhy's death in a statement Saturday afternoon, saying she donated her organs.

"Kaitlyn is an organ donor and will help save the lives of others," her father, Joseph Doorhy, said in the statement.

More than 700 Sacred Heart students gathered in a quad Friday evening for a vigil with members of Doorhy's family, university president John Petillo said in a statement posted to the university's website.

"I think it is important that we continue to celebrate the beginning of a new academic year even as we grieve for the loss of Kaitlyn," Petillo said. "Everything I have heard about Kaitlyn -- her caring for others, her dreams to be an attorney, the way she embraced life -- tells me that she would expect this from us."

Doorhy was majoring in political science and belonged to the Kappa Delta sorority.

Visitation will be at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes on Main Road in Mattituck on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Mattituck.

Doorhy's family requests that "attendees please wear bright, festive clothing to celebrate her life," according to an obituary posted on the funeral home website. With AP
