The body found in a Mastic Beach canal Tuesday morning is that of a local woman who was reported missing Monday, Suffolk police said.

The fully clothed body of Dianne Ross, 63, was found in the water by a fisherman shortly before 8 a.m., homicide detectives said.

"She was reported missing yesterday by her husband," said homicide Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick.

The Mastic Beach woman was taken to the medical examiner's office, where an autopsy was to be done Tuesday or Wednesday to determine cause of death.

Fitzpatrick said detectives are trying to retrace her steps: "Where was she on the last day? Who was she with? What was she doing?"

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477. All calls will be kept confidential.
