Cops: Driver critical after Coram crash
A Middle Island man was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash early Wednesday on County Road 83 in Coram, police said.
George Roche, 67, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital after the crash south of Mooney Pond Road at 3:53 a.m., Suffolk County police said.
Police said icy road conditions may have contributed to the crash, but the investigation remains ongoing.
Roche was driving his 2012 Chevrolet Suburban south on County Road 83 when police said he apparently lost control of the vehicle, struck a curb, then hit "several trees and a fence" on the west side of the road before the vehicle overturned onto an embankment.
Police said Roche remained in critical but stable condition at Stony Brook on Wednesday.
The crash forced the closure of southbound County Road 83 for several hours between Mooney Pond Road and Granny Road, police said.
