Cops: Driver extricated from overturned car charged with DWI

The driver of a car that crashed into a tree and overturned Thursday night in Huntington Station was later arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

Nerain Lakhanpal, 20, of Huntington Station, was arrested after being transported to Huntington Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Suffolk County police said.

He was charged with DWI, police said.

Police and fire officials said that Lakhanpal was driving a 2013 Kia when he lost control of the car on Depot Road, crashing into a guardrail and a tree, causing the car to overturn, at 9:39 p.m. Police said Lakhanpal told responding officers he had swerved to avoid another vehicle -- but police said there was no evidence that another vehicle was involved.

A Huntington Manor Fire Department spokesman said the driver was trapped in the wreck and said about 30 firefighters responded to the scene, stabilized the car with "rescue jacks" -- then used the "Jaws of Life" to remove the sedan's roof to free him.

Lakhanpal was then transported to Huntington Hospital via Huntington Community First Aid Squad ambulance.

His condition was not immediately available Friday.

Arraignment details also were not available.
