Cops: Driver sought in hit-run that left pedestrian critical
A man walking on Wellwood Avenue in East Farmingdale late Tuesday was critically injured when he was struck twice by cars, and Suffolk County police are looking for the second vehicle that drove away from the accident.
Suffolk County Police Vehicular Crime Unit detectives said an older model silver Nissan Altima hit the man, in his 60s, about 10:50 p.m.
The driver of the Nissan was last seen traveling south on Wellwood Avenue toward the Southern State Parkway.
The man was walking on Wellwood Avenue near Conklin Street when he was first hit by a 2008 Mercedes-Benz driven by Oliver David, 41, of Freeport, police said.
David, who also was driving south, was trying to stop traffic on Wellwood Avenue when the second car then hit the injured pedestrian and drove off, police said.
The man was taken by helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is being treated for head and internal injuries, police said.
David was not charged.
Police are withholding the identity of the victim, who they said is homeless, pending notification of family, according to a news release from the department.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477. All calls will be kept confidential.
