A Halesite man was struck and killed by a car Thursday night as he walked along New York Avenue, Suffolk County police said.

Jose Lucero, 28, was walking north in the traffic lane on New York Avenue in Halesite at about 9:35 p.m. when he was hit by a 2013 Honda Accord, police said.

The driver, Frances Reynoso, 21, of Halesite, also was traveling north on the roadway at the time of the accident, police said.

Lucero was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.

Reynoso was not injured.

His car was impounded for a safety check and, police said, detectives are investigating.
