Sarah Knakal, 30, of Huntington Station, is led out of the Second Precinct in Huntington Sunday for arraignment in Central Islip Criminal Court on May 11, 2014. A Huntington Station mother was arrested and charged with violating Leandra's Law after she got into a car accident Saturday and walked away, taking her three children with her, police said.

Sarah Knakal, 30, of 22 Cooper Ave., was driving a 2007 Nissan Armada west on East Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station at about 6 p.m. when she crashed into a telephone pole in the area of Cooper Avenue, and then struck a sign, Suffolk County police said.

Second Precinct patrol officers found her and the children, ages 5, 7 and 9, about 10 minutes later, down the block, in the area of the turnpike and Dix Hills Road, police said.

No one was injured, and the children were turned over to a family members, police said. In addition, police notified county Child Protective Services.

Knakal was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child 15 years old or younger (Leandra's Law), leaving the scene of an incident and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, police said.

She is scheduled for arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip on May 11.
