Cops: Huntington Station mom violated Leandra's Law

A Huntington Station mother was arrested and charged with violating Leandra's Law after she got into a car accident Saturday and walked away, taking her three children with her, police said.
Sarah Knakal, 30, of 22 Cooper Ave., was driving a 2007 Nissan Armada west on East Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station at about 6 p.m. when she crashed into a telephone pole in the area of Cooper Avenue, and then struck a sign, Suffolk County police said.
Second Precinct patrol officers found her and the children, ages 5, 7 and 9, about 10 minutes later, down the block, in the area of the turnpike and Dix Hills Road, police said.
No one was injured, and the children were turned over to a family members, police said. In addition, police notified county Child Protective Services.

She is scheduled for arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip on May 11.
