Cops: Bicyclist struck, killed on Montauk Hwy. in Amagansett
A bicyclist was killed while riding along Montauk Highway in Amagansett on Sunday morning closing the road for several hours, according to East Hampton Town police.
Mohammad Rahman, 35, of Holbrook was driving a 2011 Toyota Sienna eastbound on Montauk Highway shortly after 11 a.m. when a bicyclist entered the roadway from the eastbound shoulder causing the crash, according to police. The cyclist, Russell Windsor, 70, who police said has an address in Amagansett, was taken by Amagansett Ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital where he died.
Windsor was an orthopedic surgeon, according to East Hampton Town Police Det. Sgt. Ryan Hogan. A profile on LinkedIn states Windsor worked as an attending surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery and as a professor at Weill Cornell Medical College in Manhattan.
A member of Windsor's family declined to comment Sunday evening.
Rahman, who Hogan said was working as a ride share driver, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. No criminality is suspected.
The portion of Montauk Highway between Amagansett and Montauk known as the Napeague stretch was closed for several hours before being reopened, police said.
The Toyota was impounded for a safety inspection and the investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call East Hampton Town police detectives at 631-537-7575.
