Suffolk County police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that left a male bicyclist dead in East Patchogue on Sunday morning.

Police responded to Montauk Highway, west of Gazzola Drive, after a passing motorist called 911 to report a body in the roadway around 4:30 a.m., police said in a news release. Detectives determined the bicyclist, Alexis Velasquez, was traveling east when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle that fled the scene.

A physician assistant from the Suffolk County medical examiner's office pronounced Velasquez, 30, of Bellport, dead at the scene, police said.

Police believe the vehicle that struck Velasquez is a silver or gray Nissan SUV with front-end damage that fled east on Montauk Highway.

Anyone with information should call 631-852-6553 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477. All calls are confidential.
