Suffolk police have identified the man killed in a single-vehicle crash in Greenlawn Sunday night as 32-year-old Joseph Scappatore, of East Northport.

Scappatore was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado on Greenlawn Road when it left the road near Ducharme Lane, struck a tree and flipped at about 9:35 p.m., police said in a news release.

Greenlawn Rescue took Scappatore in critical condition to Stony Brook University Hospital.

In a phone interview Monday, Scappatore’s father, also named Joseph, said the family had “no clue” how his son, a groundskeeper for Syosset school district, had crashed. “We’re baffled,” he said.

The family was planning services, he said. In addition to his parents, Scappatore is survived by several nieces and a nephew.
