New York State Police identified a man who died after a personal watercraft he was riding on in Shinnecock Bay capsized as Barry Riddick, 56 of Southampton.

Riddick and another man, identified Tuesday night as John Jackman, 52, also of Southampton, were aboard the watercraft when it capsized late Monday afternoon offshore from the Shinnecock Indian Reservation, state police said.

Rescuers from the Southampton Fire Department and town constables responded at about 5:30 p.m. Monday and pulled Jackman from the water as he clung to the watercraft, police said. The rescue team continued to search the area and located Riddick, who was unresponsive on the shore of the reservation.

Both men were taken to Southampton Hospital, where Riddick was pronounced dead, police said. Jackman is expected to survive.

Both men were wearing life jackets but not wet suits, police said.

The State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating and anyone who may be a witness or have information is asked to contact Troop L at 631-756-3300.
