Police: Woman exits car in West Islip, struck by driver who fled
Suffolk Police are investigating the death of an 80-year-old woman who they said was intentionally struck and killed Sunday night in West Islip by the driver of a Subaru after she got out of the vehicle.
The driver fled the scene but Investigators believe they know the person's identity.
Helga McNulty, 80, was a passenger in the Subaru heading north on Tanglewood Road at 9:25 p.m. near Ryan Street when police said she got out of the car.
The man driving the Subaru made a U-turn and police said he intentionally struck her with the car and continued heading south on Tanglewood Road. Police did not say why McNulty exited the vehicle.
Third Precinct officers and a crew from West Islip Ambulance found the woman "seriously" injured on a sidewalk. Video footage from the scene showed a damaged fence on Ryan Street.
McNulty was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip where medical personnel pronounced her dead.
Police later located the suspected vehicle, said Suffolk Police Lt. Kevin Byrer.
"Detectives have located the vehicle and believe they know the identity of the driver, who is a male, known to the victim." police said in a statement.
Police did not describe how the driver and victim know each other.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
