Kings Park couple charged in shooting

A Kings Park woman reported missing last week and her boyfriend, also from Kings Park, each face an attempted murder charge after a shooting inside a New Orleans hotel room Tuesday, officials said.
Sara Mott, 27, had been reported missing to Suffolk County police on June 20, officials said. Court records show she had a drunken-driving case pending in Suffolk.
New Orleans police said Mott was wounded in the shooting, which left a 49-year-old Florida man in critical condition. Police said Mott's boyfriend, identified as Kevin Cahill, 29, shot the man inside a room at the Wyndham Garden Plaza in the Central Business District about 9 a.m. Tuesday. They said Cahill accidentally shot Mott in the foot and she initially was hospitalized in good condition.
Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office records show that Mott was charged with attempted first-degree murder and was being held.
The court records show Cahill has been charged with attempted first-degree murder as well as negligent injuring, possession of a firearm or weapon by a felon, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and illegal possession of stolen property.
Bail bond was set in Orleans Parish Magistrate Court at $635,000 for Cahill and $250,000 for Mott. Both are due back in court Aug. 26.
According to a narrative provided Newsday by New Orleans police, Cahill and the victim were "involved in an argument" inside the room at the Wyndham, when Cahill produced a gun and shot the victim "multiple times."
During the shooting, police said, Cahill "inadvertently shot his girlfriend [Mott] in the foot."
Cahill and Mott then fled the scene, police said, but were caught a short time later.
Police said drugs and a handgun were recovered at the scene, but declined to elaborate, citing the continuing investigation into the crime.
Suffolk police declined to comment further about Mott, saying Wednesday only that she "is no longer considered a missing person" and referring all calls to the police department with jurisdiction.
