Police: Fire burns vacant school building in Lake Grove
Suffolk County police arson investigators are examining the cause of a blaze firefighters battled Friday night on the grounds of a vacant school building in Lake Grove.
There were no injuries in the fire, police said.
Suffolk police received a call shortly before 10:30 p.m. about a fire on Moriches Road at The Lake Grove School building.
The special education school and residential facility, which served roughly 40 children, closed in June 2013 after it became embroiled in an overbilling dispute with state auditors, Newsday reported at the time.
An audit by State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli found that Windwood Meadow Inc., a Medford-based management company, overbilled by as much as $7.7 million over four years for expenses at Lake Grove and another school, Mountain Lake Children's Residence in upstate Essex County.
Windwood officials could not immediately be reached for comment about the fire.
