A North Patchogue teenager faces arraignment on an indictment Wednesday in the attack on two police officers with a knife last week that sent one of the officers to the hospital, the Suffolk district attorney's office said.
The two officers were responding to a call June 15 about a man with a knife on Wilmarth Avenue in North Patchogue when they saw Liam Rooney, 18, on the street, prosecutors said.
When they tried to question him, Rooney several times refused to take his hands from his pockets and suddenly pulled out a knife with a 4-inch blade from his jacket pocket, authorities said.
He hit an officer in the head with the butt of the knife, then slashed at him, cutting his shirt sleeve, prosecutors said. The police officer was treated for a head contusion at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.
Rooney, of Wilmarth Avenue, has been held in jail in lieu of a $105,000 cash bail on charges of arrest charges of assault, criminal possession of a weapon fourth degree, resisting arrest and two counts of menacing in the second degree.
His arraignment is scheduled for Thursday in Central Islip.
