A Long Island Rail Road train struck and killed a 43-year-old man Thursday night on the tracks near the Oakdale station in an apparent suicide, police and officials said.

Railroad spokesman Sam Zambuto said the 8:36 p.m. train from Babylon to Speonk struck "an unauthorized person" on the tracks about 9 p.m. He said the victim was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he died.

The victim was not identified.

Four trains were affected. The eastbound train that struck the man was delayed 50 minutes. The westbound 9:59 p.m. from Speonk to Babylon was canceled and customers provided bus service, Zambuto said.

An eastbound train from Jamaica to Montauk and another westbound train were also affected.
