One man died after being pulled from a burning house on Campo Avenue in Selden early Sunday morning, Suffolk police said.
Henry Zdenek III, 26, was pulled from a second-floor bedroom window by members of the Selden Fire Department. Zdenek, who did not live at the house, was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Medical Center, police said.
Four other occupants of the house escaped with minor injuries, fire officials said.
Selden Fire Department chief Tony Ryan said Zdenek was unconscious when firefighters arrived.
Richie Zdenek told News12 Long Island he was the victim's brother and a volunteer firefighter who was on the scene.
"He was a great guy," Richie Zdenek said outside the home Sunday.
"When we arrived, the house had heavy fire on the second floor," Ryan said, and a staircase leading upstairs was blocked by flames. A Selden firefighter who dragged Zdenek partially out of a second-floor window suffered burns to his fingers before a truck with a tall ladder arrived and firefighters were able to bring Zdenek down.
Ryan did not name the firefighter, who was treated at the Stony Brook hospital.
More than 60 firefighters from Selden, Terryville and Centereach brought the 3:27 a.m. fire under control in half an hour, Ryan said, with ambulance assistance from the Coram, Holtsville and Ronkonkoma fire departments. Suffolk County police are investigating.
