A Medford motorcyclist was pronounced dead Sunday afternoon after a collision between his bike and a sport utility vehicle in Yaphank, Suffolk County police said.

The crash, which killed motorcyclist Michael Luthy, 34, occurred at 2:40 p.m. on Patchogue-Yaphank Road at Express Drive North, police said. He was thrown from the motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Luthy's 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling north on Sills Road in Yaphank when it collided with a 2002 Mercury SUV traveling on Express Drive North.

Israel Berger Carrera-Garcia, 38, of Flanders, was driving the SUV and suffered minor injuries caused when its air bag deployed. No charges have been filed, police said.

Police impounded both the SUV and motorcycle for a safety check, police said. The Sixth Squad is investigating. Police ask that anyone who witnessed the crash to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
