A driver was critically injured after striking the side of a tractor trailer in an early-morning crash Thursday in St. James that temporarily closed two roads, Suffolk County police said in a statement.

The driver, Matthew Basile, 35, of Brentwood, who was behind the wheel of a 2006 Hyundai, was headed westbound on Route 347, also known as Nesconset Highway, when his vehicle hit a tractor trailer headed eastbound on Middle Country Road at approximately 1:35 a.m., police said.

Basile is being treated at Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

The tractor trailer driver was not hurt. That vehicle was inspected at the scene of the crash, police said.

Both westbound Route 347 and a section of Middle Country Road, from the highway to Alexander Avenue, have reopened, police said.

The Hyundai's safety will be checked. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
