Body of missing swimmer found in Shinnecock Canal, police say
The body of a 22-year-old man who has been missing since he jumped into the Shinnecock Canal in Hampton Bays early Thursday morning has been located, Southampton Town police said.
Police say the body of John Escorcia-Arroyo, of Westhampton, was discovered in the canal at 2:30 p.m. Saturday by a boater, who alerted the bay constables.
He went missing early Thursday morning after a friend, whose identity was not released, called 911 at 2:11 a.m. Thursday to report that Escorcia-Arroyo had left Dream Night Club and jumped into the inlet — in an attempt, she said, to swim across the Shinnecock Canal.
Police said the woman lost sight of Escorcia-Arroyo after a few minutes and then attempted to locate him for several minutes before contacting police.
Police searched for Escorcia-Arroyo using patrol officers, detectives, drones, a Southampton Village K-9 unit, town bay constables, fire marshals, members of the Hampton Bays, North Sea and Southampton fire departments and even the U.S. Coast Guard.
