North Wellwood Avenue near the Long Island Rail Road tracks in East Farmingdale is closed to motorists until 4 p.m. Saturday to allow for safety improvement work.

The northbound and southbound lanes were closed about 7 a.m. so the work could begin, according to an advisory issued by the state Department of Transportation.

Drivers should plan alternate routes or they may experience travel delays, the notice states. Northbound vehicles will be detoured back to New Horizon Boulevard to New Highway to Routt 109 back to Wellwood Avenue, while southbound drivers will be detoured to Route 109 to Straight Path and back to Wellwood Avenue.
