Officials: Fire guts East Farmingdale laundry and linen supply business
A late-night blaze gutted a building housing a laundry and linen supply company in East Farmingdale, Suffolk County police and fire officials said.
An East Farmingdale fire official told News 12 Long Island that two firefighters were transported to a hospital to be evaluated for high blood pressure.
The fire at A&S Coat & Apron Supply Co. on Marine Street was reported at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, fire officials said. Suffolk police said Arson Squad detectives responded to the scene and said initial indications were that the cause was electrical.
Fire officials said that heavy equipment had been called in at 6:30 a.m. to clear out -- and possibly level -- the building, which officials said was "heavily damaged" and sustained structural collapse.
Volunteers from East Farmingdale, North Amityville, South Farmingdale and other departments battled the fire, officials said. Department chiefs were not immediately available for comment.
Fire officials said smoke from the fire briefly caused visibility problems on the nearby Southern State Parkway, but that was not an issue for the morning commute.
