An out-of-control dump truck careened across three lanes of traffic and the center median on Sunrise Highway in East Patchogue Thursday, before overturning and coming to rest in the opposing lanes, Suffolk County police said.

Only the driver was hurt in the crash at about 9:40 a.m. near Exit 54, Hospital Road, police said.

Police said the driver, identified only as a 28-year-old man, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

There were no other vehicles involved.

The crash first closed three lanes of Sunrise in the area -- one westbound lane and two eastbound lanes. One eastbound lane reopened at 10:30 a.m. The westbound lane was reopened by about 1 p.m. and the other eastbound lane reopened by 1:40 p.m.

Police said the dump truck was headed west on Sunrise when it crossed three lanes of traffic and the median, striking a guardrail and overturning before coming to rest in the eastbound lanes, dumping gravel across the road surface.

Police initially said the truck was headed east.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
