A 40-year-old Hampton Bays man was arrested Tuesday in New Jersey and charged with failing to register his address as required because he is a Level 2 sex offender, police said.

Southampton Town police said John Keane was arrested on a town indictment warrant at the Crystal Plaza Catering Hall in Livingston, N.J., by U.S. marshals from the New York / New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshals Sex Offender Investigation Branch. Keane was transported to the Essex County Jail to await extradition.

Police said a joint investigation by Southampton Officers Melissa Elliston and Doris Joseph, in conjunction with the Suffolk County police Special Victims Unit and the U.S. marshals, led to the arrest. Police said Keane had been living on Clairedale Drive, though it was not immediately clear how long he had been living at that address.

A Level 2 sex offender is one with a moderate risk of repeat offense.
