Registered nurse who revived patient wins RN of the year
Daniel McCarthy, assistant director of nursing at Daleview Care Center in Farmingdale, will be recognized as registered nurse of the year Tuesday by the New York State Health Facilities Association at its 67th annual convention, held in conjunction with the New York State Center for Assisted Living.
McCarthy, 41, who said he was “honored and shocked” to hear of the recognition, plans to attend the event to be held at the Sagamore Resort, Bolton Landing.
On National Nurses Day in May 2015 he was honored by his facility at the prompting of a patient whom he had revived three times in a two-month period, once using the Heimlich maneuver and twice administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the facility’s administrator said at the time.
McCarthy, of West Babylon, has been a nurse since 2007, inspired to enter the field after seeing the difference made by health care professionals when his now late father spent time in hospice three years earlier.
It’s work, he says, he can be proud of, and includes making people feel comfortable.
Three other Long Islanders, from Maple Pointe at Rockville Centre Assisted Living, also are being recognized at Tuesday’s banquet.
They are LPN Billy Parker, assisted living nurse of the year; home health aide Althea Lambert, noble caregiver in assisted living; and executive director Tammy Marshall, innovative practice award.
Dolores Dellova of the Nesconset Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation is one of the volunteers of the year.
