Helped by area residents and a golf cart, police arrested two fleeing Huntington Station men who allegedly used a stolen car in the burglary of a Sayville home Tuesday, Suffolk County police said.

Irak Colon, 26, and Ruben Santana, 19, both of 96 Lennox Rd., were arrested on burglary and possession of stolen property charges after they broke into a home on Bohemia Parkway at about 9:55 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

A witness saw Colon and Santana walking on Durham Avenue and acting suspiciously, police said.

After the men entered a car, the witness called police with a license plate number. The car had been reported stolen, police said.

While inside the home, the suspects became frightened when they saw patrol cars, Det. Sgt. Bryan McMenemy said.

A short time later, other witnesses told police they saw the men jump fences near the home on Bohemia Parkway.

Several residents came out of their homes when they heard sounds in their yards, McMenemy said. Some shouted at the suspects and others chased them toward patrol units.

McMenemy said residents were crucial in helping police arrest the suspects. "People tend to get a little pumped up when it's their property," he said.

A police officer used a golf cart to chase down Santana on the grounds of the Island Hills Golf Club, McMenemy said.

Colon is charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of attempted burglary and possession of stolen property, and Santana is charged with two counts of burglary and possession of stolen property, police said.

They were scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip.
