Ronkonkoma train hits person
A westbound Long Island Rail Road train hit a man east of the Central Islip station Wednesday morning, a spokesman for the commuter service said.
A man not authorized to be on the tracks was hit at 9:20 a.m., spokesman Sam Zambuto said. The man was alive when removed by emergency personnel and taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, he said.
As of late Wednesday afternoon, Zambuto said he had no more information on the victim's condition.
Service was restored by about 10:30 a.m. after the accident.
The train that hit the man, the 9:11 a.m. from Ronkonkoma, was delayed at Central Islip for about an hour and 20 minutes, he said. Two other trains, both originating from Penn Station and headed for Ronkonkoma, also were significantly delayed, he said.
In an email alert, the LIRR said buses were ordered to take customers east from Brentwood and west from Ronkonkoma around the accident scene.
