A 17-year-old female Sachem High School North student died Monday night after suffering "a medical incident" at Sachem High School East, police and school officials said Tuesday.

The student was not identified. Suffolk County police said they received a call at 9:15 p.m. Monday from Sachem East about a sick or injured person.

A school district source said the girl was at marching band practice at the high school, which is at 177 Granny Rd. in Farmingville. She was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Suffolk police said. Her death appears to be "noncriminal," police said, but they gave no further details.

Sachem district Superintendent Kenneth Graham said in a statement Tuesday morning: "It is with deep sorrow that the district has learned that an incoming senior at Sachem North High School tragically passed away last night."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the individual’s family and friends during this difficult time," the statement said.

Graham said support services would be available as of 8 a.m. Tuesday at both high schools.
