Saltaire home damaged in early morning fire, official says
A single-family home was severely damaged in an early-morning fire Sunday in Saltaire but there were no injuries, a Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau official said.
Sgt. Glenn Devenish, who noted that Saltaire is within the bureau’s jurisdiction, said the blaze started about 2:30 a.m. at a house on Bay Promenade.
“All occupants were out safely” when firefighters arrived, Devenish said. “It was called in as a smoke condition, but upon arrival it was an active fire.”
Devenish said the fire began somewhere under the house, but that he was not sure exactly where or whether the home had a basement.
“The fire went through the AC [air conditioning] vent into the house and there was a little bit of a battle there,” Devenish said. “I think they had to take down a ceiling.”
Devenish said it took about a half-hour to bring the blaze under control and that firefighters from the Saltaire department were assisted by those from Fair Harbor, Kismet and Ocean Beach.
Devenish said the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad was also called in to help determine the origin and cause of the fire.
