The Suffolk County SPCA is trying to raise money to treat a starving and injured dog found abandoned the day before Thanksgiving in a Bellport back yard.

The female mix-breed, named Midnight, has a broken femur and was infested with fleas, according to a Monday news release by the animal protection group.

Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said the dog also has internal parasites, and has joint problems and an issue with one of her knees. Gross said the dog must gain weight before "extensive surgery" can be performed.

The dog's injuries were "caused by blunt force trauma," said Dr. Dennis Dougherty, the veterinarian who will perform the surgery, according to the SPCA.
