Construction has begun on a $6.9 million project to repave 14 miles of road through the Town of Southold, the state Department of Transportation said.

The work now consists of cleaning and repairing drainage structures and off-road work, and is taking place without lane closures, officials said in a news release, adding that paving work begins after Labor Day.

"To accomplish repaving operations while minimizing the impact on residents, businesses and motorists, construction will be staged on shorter sections of NY Route 25/Main Road," said the release. "In addition, travel lanes will be shifted rather than closed wherever possible, and work will take place during off-peak day time and night time hours."

The project is being done by Posillico Civil Inc. of Farmingdale.

The new road, stretching from Tuckers Lane and the end of NY Route 25, will have safety features such as bike lane striping and more visible pedestrian crosswalks, officials said, as well as audible rumble devices on the centerline "to provide a noise and physical vibration warning to motorists who stray across into oncoming traffic."

Motorists are being notified of the work and lane closures via portable electronic road signs.

Officials said that off-peak daytime travel lane shifts will be in effect Monday through Friday, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day after Labor Day and nighttime travel lane shifts in Greenport will be in effect between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
