A Suffolk County police officer trying to pull over a driver in Melville was involved in an automobile accident Tuesday morning when the officer's patrol car and another vehicle collided, police said.

Both the officer and the driver of the third vehicle were taken to Huntington Hospital and treated for neck and back injuries, a police spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman had no further information on their injuries or the accident.

Police said the crash happened at 8:41 a.m. on Old Country Road and Sparks Street. No one was charged in the accident.

Police said the driver of the other car was briefly trapped but emergency responders managed to open a jammed door, freeing the driver.
