Three people were hurt, including a motorcyclist whose injuries were considered serious, in a three-vehicle crash on Sunrise Highway in West Islip on Friday afternoon, Suffolk County police said.

A 31-year-old Ronkonkoma man was riding his 2000 Yamaha east on Sunrise Highway between Higbie Lane and Udall Road when he lost control of the motorcycle and struck the back of a 2023 Tesla, according to a police news release. He was thrown from the Yamaha.

Meanwhile, a 48-year-old Island Park man, who was also going east, lost control of his 1994 Harley-Davidson while trying to avoid the crash and also struck the back of the Tesla, police said.

The Yamaha rider was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip with serious injuries, according to police. The driver of the Tesla,  a 37-year-old Lindenhurst man, was taken to the same hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life threatening.  The Harley-Davidson rider was sent to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, also for treatment of injuries that were not life threatening.

After the collision,

first responders detoured motorists off Sunrise Highway’s eastbound lanes onto the service road at Exit 40, which connects to the Babylon-Northport Expressway.

Police asked that anyone with information about the collision, contact the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
