Way to Go: Madison Mentz, Shirley

A Shirley student's passion for school safety has earned her a top state designation.

Madison Mentz, a fifth-grader at William Floyd Elementary School, was named 2014 "Patroller of the Year" by the AAA Safety Patrol of New York for her efforts to keep her school a safe environment.

Madison, 10, is captain of her school's AAA School Safety Patrol, where her responsibilities include assisting with bus safety, communicating emergency procedures to fellow members, and ensuring that each member is at his or her designated post.

"Every day is a journey for me, and I learn something from all students in this building," Madison wrote in an essay submitted as part of the selection process. "If you're doing your job, great, but you can always do better."

Madison also has participated in community cleanups and clothing, food and toy drives. She is a member of the American Taekwondo Association's Junior Instructor Leadership Program and the YMCA's Aspiring Young Leaders Program.

"Madison's intellect, leadership and concern for her fellow students are evident," said Darryl Wilson, the school's assistant principal and patrol adviser.

In addition, she is a member of her school's Student Council and Art, Garden and Tech clubs.
