Massachusetts State Police have identified the Long Island man who was among five people killed in a horrendous wrong-way crash early Monday in Middleborough as Cory P. Licata, 18, of West Babylon.

Licata was a student at Becker College in Worcester, Massachusetts, according to police. He and three other people, all from Massachusetts, were in a vehicle on Interstate 495 that was hit by a wrong-way driver, police said.

Police said Licata, fellow Becker student Jordan J. Fisher, 19, of Harwich, and Jordan J. Galvin-Jutras, 19, of Hyannis, a student at Anna Maria College in Paxton, were in a 2003 Mercury Sable being driven northbound by Kraig A. Diggs, 20, also a student at Anna Maria, when it was hit at 12:11 a.m.

Their car was struck by a 2011 Infiniti G37 being driven south in the northbound lanes of the divided highway by Valantein V. Burson, 31, of Fall River, Massachusetts. She also was killed in the crash.

The impact of the crash caused the northbound vehicle “to become engulfed in fire,” State Police said Monday.

Police said they are trying to determine why Burson was driving the wrong way on the four-lane divided road.

In a statement released Tuesday, Becker College said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two of our students. . . . We also grieve for the other lives that were lost. Our sincere condolences and prayers go out to their families, friends, and local communities. To support our campus community, the college is providing counseling services.”

Police, in a statement released Monday, said of the wrong-way driver: “Why she ended up driving on the wrong side of the highway, and any contributing factors to her erratic operation, remain subjects of the ongoing State Police investigation.”
