Extra security at William Floyd high school after social media threat
William Floyd High School officials were taking extra precautions to check students for weapons with metal detectors Thursday following unspecified social media rumors about the school.
Suffolk County police said officers were stationed at the high school throughout the day in response to the social media posts "concerning a potential threat at the school."
William Floyd School District Officials said they were sent social media screenshots, but there were no direct threats to the high school or any other schools or buildings in the district.
All students were checked with a metal detector wand to search for weapons as they entered the school for the day. The school also moved recess and gym classes and athletics inside for the day.
District officials said there was no lockdown or incidents at the school.
"We have only received social media screenshots of people discussing a threat that someone else heard about," district officials said in a statement. "However, the district takes any discussion of this nature extremely seriously as the safety and security of students and staff is the number one priority."
