Driver Zachary Rauso, 20, killed in Selden collision with Suffolk County Transit bus
A man was killed in Selden when his car and a transit bus crashed late Monday afternoon, Suffolk police said.
Zachary Rauso, 20, of Selden, died at the scene, while the driver of a Suffolk County Transit bus, Leonard Secaira, and the lone passenger were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.
The 6B bus, which runs between Smith Haven Mall and Farmingville, was going north on Dare Road when a southbound sedan suddenly swerved, said Garry Lenberger, Suffolk Transit's director of operations.
The crash occurred just before 6 p.m., police said.
"Apparently, the driver of the other car came into the bus head-on," said bus spokesman Gil Anderson.
The bus GPS showed it was going 24 mph, under the 30 mph limit there, Lenberger said.
Secaira was treated for cuts to his head and released, Lenberger said. He was given alcohol and tests, which is standard policy in crashes for the bus line, and he passed the tests, Lenberger said.
Detectives ask witnesses to call them at 631-854-8652.
CORRECTION: Due to incorrect information provide by the bus company, an initial version of this story misstated the crash location, the bus route and the condition of the bus passenger.
