Long Island motorists can expect several overnight road closures following the extended Independence Day holiday weekend.

The New York State Department of Transportation announced this week that portions of three Long Island roads will close for overnight construction beginning Monday.

The eastbound portion of Jericho Turnpike will be closed between the Long Island Expressway North Service Road and the intersection of Cedar Swamp Road and North Broadway in Jericho on weeknights from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The concrete pavement repairs will take approximately four weeks, weather permitting, during which time vehicles will be rerouted onto the Long Island Expressway South Service Road for about one mile to North Broadway for access to Jericho Turnpike.

According to a Department of Transportation spokesperson, the Jericho Turnpike construction is part of a larger $9.1 million project that will facilitate concrete pavement repairs at several locations.

Workers will resurface the pavement on both the northbound and southbound sides of the Robert Moses Causeway between Montauk Highway and Ocean Parkway. Starting Monday, one southbound lane will be closed weeknights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for approximately two weeks, weather permitting. Following that portion of the project, two northbound lanes will be closed weeknights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for approximately two more weeks. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the funding for the causeway resurfacing last week as part of an $18.3 million funding package that will facilitate the improvement of five state roads throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties over the next two years.

Finally, workers will repair the concrete pavement along portions of the westbound lane of the Long Island Expressway in Suffolk. Construction crews will close two lanes between Exits 64 and 67 — Route 112 and Yaphank Avenue — weeknights from 8 to 10 p.m. From 10 p.m. until 5 a.m., all lanes will close, and vehicles will be directed to the North Service Road. This work will last for about eight weeks.

Two lanes will also be closed along the approximately six-mile stretch between Exits 67 and 69 — Yaphank Avenue and Wading River Road — weeknights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for about five months.

This LIE project will cost $19.7 million, according to a DOT spokesperson.

Hochul announced Wednesday that construction projects currently underway on New York State highways will be suspended from 6 a.m. Thursday until Monday “to help ease travel during the busy holiday weekend.”

New York State’s Move Over Law requires drivers to slow down and move over for roadway construction crews.
