$1.1M tax break for senior housing fixes
An affordable housing project for seniors in Garden City Park has won a tax break for a planned $10 million renovation.
The development is one of 35 projects statewide to receive a portion of $78 million in loans and tax credits through New York State Homes and Community Renewal, according to the agency.
Denton Green Housing, which has 113 rental units, won a competitive $1.1 million annual low-income housing tax credit, the state said.
Stephanie Knepper, project manager for developer SKA Marin, based in Great Neck, said Denton Green has not had any major upgrades since it opened in 1972.
“We’re bringing the project into the 21st century,” she said. Plans call for new elevators, more energy-efficient kitchens and bathrooms, better handicapped accessibility and an improved driveway, Knepper said.
Hy Portnoy, president of the board of Denton Green, said the award would “enable us to upgrade our building to provide a safer, greener and more senior-friendly environment for our residents.”
The housing project, which is limited to residents 62 years or older has a waiting list of more than three years, according to the state website.
